Estate Planning: A New Year’s Resolution for Your Family

Estate Planning: A New Year’s Resolution for Your Family

In January, callers to our office echo a common refrain: establishing or updating their est ate plan is a New Year’s Resolution. Being newlyweds, Tyler and I can relate. On your seemingly endless to-do list, estate planning may feel more like a “have to” than a “want to”. Yet, in designing our own estate plan, we experienced firsthand something Tyler always tells clients: estate planning is not just documents. Instead, estate planning is a chance to put your hopes and dreams into action.

What Brings You Happiness?

Since we do not yet have children, it was not crystal clear who should benefit from our revocable living trust. This led to an invaluable conversation. What motivates us? What brings us joy? These are the questions we asked ourselves.

In our first year of marriage, Tyler and I have come to appreciate how each of us is unique. We come from distinct backgrounds. We went to rival colleges (for the football fans out there, Bedlam is a tough week in our household). We also approach many situations differently. However, we have several mutual goals and hobbies. For example, we share a strong desire to serve others. Last year, we formed a non-profit called Golf for a Cure to support Alzheimer’s research. Every winter, we put on our ski boots and hit the slopes as much as we can. One day, we hope to translate our passion for skiing into an investment opportunity by purchasing a home in the mountains. By talking about our estate plan, we realized the importance of using our talents and blessings to further our passions – both during our lifetimes and long after we are gone.

Using a Trust to Build Your Legacy

You too can experience the peace of mind in knowing your values will last for generations. At The Law Office of Tyler R. Barrett, P.L.L.C., we focus on getting to know each individual client. Tyler and I are proof positive that no two people are exactly like. That means there is no one-size-fits-all estate plan. Through a revocable living trust, you can create an estate plan that is unique to you and your family. Estate planning formed a vision for how we want to approach our lives together. Mr. and Mrs. New Year’s Resolution 1 – estate planning, check! Number 2, which aisle is steamed broccoli on again?
